With some lucky connections and some careful planning the camera club went on an outing to the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope ‘The Dish’ for the Christmas party. The day was marked to be 41 degrees (in November!!) with possible storms, great weather for an outdoor barbeque. However, we were very lucky with the weather and after a short down pour on arrival we had a beautiful breeze and nice dramatic storm clouds in the sky.
It was fantastic to see so many members taking advantage of the rare opportunity to have behind the scenes access to ‘The Dish’. As the night went on the glow of the telescope offered an opportunity for us to test out various exposure settings. Here are a few shots from the evening

After we had taken a few snaps and had a bite to eat it was time to present the awards. Category awards went to Di Orr (Blonde), Joanne Chatman (Beginners) and Jim MacKay (Intermediate) – Congratulations and keep up the top work! Congratulations also to Frances for taking out the Top Shot award, as chosen by Luke Wong at the previous meeting. And congratulations to Marc Payne who claimed the title of Photographer of the Year, awarded to Marc because he had the most wins from the monthly competitions in 2012.
A big thank you to our two tour guides for the evening Brett Preisig and Tim Ruckley for showing the group around, staying at work after hours and answering the numerous questions thrown at them throughout the evening.
I am looking forward to what the New Year will bring for the camera club, with many challenging, but fun tutorials coming up. The next meeting is on the 15th of January, if you haven’t already check out the 2013 Camera Club Program.
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas from the Parkes Camera Club!
